Canadian born Tina Harris is a multi-instrumentalist with a skill base encompassing performance, composition and musical direction. Emerging from a community arts background as performer, workshop leader and music mentor, she has gone on to engage in a career in music and theatre where she has been bandleader, composer and arranger for many genres and styles of ensemble, including big band, cabaret, latin, funk and a cappella.
As bassist she has played many styles from Afro Cuban and West African, through funk, soul, reggae and punk, as well as cabaret and music theatre, most recently playing in Sweet Charity for the inaugural show of Sydney’s Hayes Theatre (2014) and 2015 season at Sydney Opera House and VAC in Melbourne and Wollongong.
In 2014, she did the Australian tour with Woodstock legend, folk pop diva, Melanie Safka. She is currently musical director, composer/arranger and bassist for her formidable 12 piece salsa orchestra, El Orqueston (2010-present) as well as bassist with Keyim Ba, electrifying West African 8 piece playing high energy original music led by Sibo Bangoura.
With the assistance of the Australia Council for the Arts back in 1997, she recorded a CD of her original compostions and has recently reprised her ensemble Delicatessen, a 7 piece jazz/funk/world music combo.
Theatre musical direction credits include Helpmann Award winner, Smoke and Mirrors, featuring iOTA (2010-2011), for which she also co-composed instrumental underscore music (Sydney Festival 2010/2011, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Edinburgh Festival, Melbourne and Auckland Arts Festivals 2010/2011).
She was musical director for the original Australian production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, (starring iOTA and directed by Craig Illot – 2006-2008).
Prior to 2000, she was associate musical director/bassist/guitarist/keyboardist on a number of main stage music theatre productions, including RENT, and The New Rocky Horror Show.
